Lou Jones Death Row Portraits @ ArtSpace at Bentley Library, NECC

Lou Jones, a Boston based professional photographer, has compiled a series of portrait photographs of men and women on death row. This exhibit has toured internationally and will be in the library through April 4th.

Description:
Giving himself the provocative task of capturing the candid expressions of death row inmates, Jones has used the power of his camera to present these inmates as real people and not just the dark side of humanity. His book, Final Exposure: Portraits from Death Row chronicles his six-year odyssey documenting these men and women incarcerated in the U.S.

Joshua Goode says the following about his work, "I am creating a new mythology based upon my personal history by exploring a manifested past civilization. Remnants of this civilization are constructed to resemble archaic ruins. These sites are compiled of personal relics from my past and influences from various cultures such as Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Lakota Sioux. These arrangements appear to be antiquated parts of their surroundings as though recently unearthed by archaeologists and revealed to the modern world. As I continue to engage these relics, I gain a greater insight to myself and other repeating characters central to the development of these “lost worlds”. "

Tom Vartabedian Shares Passion for the Armenian People

Meet veteran photojournalist Tom Vartabedian Feburary 12, 2009, Thursday night form 5 PM to 8PM at the ArtSpace @ Bentley Library at NECC - Haverhill Campus.

The 30 color photographs, which are 10x13, are part of a collection taken by Vartabedian during his trip to Armenia in 2006.

He paid particularly close attention to life in the outlying regions of this historic land, whose history dates back 3,000 years. In addition to the exhibit, Vartabedian also is working on publishing a coffee table book of his photographs.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Friday Tom Vartabedian and Linda Germain hung the Armenian Village people exhibit @ the ArtSpace @ Bentley Library at the Haverhill Campus of Northern Essex Community College.

Tom's passion for his native land can easily be experienced by the viewer. There is a story behind every image and face. Ask one question about a photograph, and Tom will tell a story that makes you want to go to Armenia. This exhibit has already received tremendous exposure inside the Armenian community throughout Greater Boston, and this will be a first showing in the non-Armenian venue. Next, it moves to Merrimack College in March and the Haverhill Public Library in April.

During the month of February at the ArtSpace at Bentley Library at NECC, Tom Vartabedian, will be exhibiting 30 color photographs which celebrate the people of Armenia. Tom captured these images during several trips to his homeland.

The exhibit will run from February 1 thru February 28th, 2009

The photo shown here is entitled "Alphabet Child at Zangezur."

Tom worked as a photojournalist at the Haverhill Gazette for 40 years and continues to write a column for the paper. Tom has won numerous awards from UPI, AP and NE Press Association. He has published photos in the Armenian Weekly for 40 years and has shared his passion with others for a lifetime.

Paul Devine talks about his process: "I choose the subjects after sensing some immediate, strong impression such as a shadow under an awning, a humorous arrangement of roadway markings, or the strength and power of a truck tractor.

I do drawings on site, and allow prominent or interesting features determine the direction of the composition. I’m less interested in an accurate representation of the scene, and encourage myself to exaggerate form and manipulate scale.

Paul Devine to Exhibit Urban Landscapes @ NECC

Painter, Paul Devine will be exhibiting several of his urban landscape paintings for the month of November at the Art Space @ Bentley Library.

The chaotic arrangement of strip malls, office buildings, parking lots and vehicles is the inspiration for this group of paintings.

Something for Everyone @ the Spatial Relations Exhibit

David Hyland has 6 large scale photographs of everyday places like a wet road, a beach cottage or pile of sand. Each image has a strong relationship to the earth/ground. He is also showing 7 three dimensional works of cement, steel, wood and paper. They are twisted, tumbling and "transparent" houses.

Steve Grobis seems to celebrate the 1970's with his four found object sculptures. He combines avocado green sink and an explosion of cables and wires in one piece that hangs on the wall. He stops the viewer in his tracks with orange and gold carpet that sits on the floor and flanks an old orange philco refrigerator door. Anther piece features a harvest gold high chair and red light.

Andrea Panaro shows off her wide range of interests. She is exhibiting 3 woodblock prints entitled "Plane Exploding" and 8 acrylic paintings. The paintings have an earthy feel to them. Some are abstracted figures and other seem to have the forms of rocks or stone. Andrea varies the size of her canvas but keeps the color palate very similar. http://www.necc.mass.edu/

October at the ArtSpace will feature the work of three recent graduates of Montserrat College of Art, Andrea Panaro, Steve Grobis and David Hyland, beginning Sept 27, through October 25, 2008. This show is free and open to the public. The exhibit is entitled “Spatial Relations” and will include sculpture, painting, printmaking and photography. All three artists put a large emphasis on the importance of space, whether it be in reference to the picture plane or that of a 3-D sculpture that requires a change of environment to be understood.

Andrea Panaro an NECC alumni, is a mixed media artist, whose work deals mainly with abstraction.

Metamorphic @ the ArtSpace for September

The show is up and is well worth the trip to NECC/Haverhill to see the abstract paintings by Sean Palmatier. He has 15 pieces of colorful abstract works that are full of motion and emotion. He will be giving a talk about the paintings on Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 at 10:30 in the exhibit space.

Sean Palmatier talks abouts his work as follows: Since I began painting in non-representational abstractions my approach has been to do so as if I were painting a place of physical substance rather than just applying paint to surface. Through the development of this work I have come to see the evolution of multiple repeating expressive elements. They manifest themselves in ways unique to particular psychological and emotional states. More recently I have come to know these “expressive elements” as you would characters in a play. Three of them, so far, that influence the world depicted in my canvases. One is usually dominant but they are all ever-present to maintain the balance between each other. As I explored these characters it seemed only fitting to give them names.

KING-King represents structure, stability, order and strength. He is resolve in the face of adversity. He is reason. King tends to manifest himself in forms that reflect these traits. Solid, three-dimensional geometric forms are his signature.

HAND-Creation incarnate. Driven to constant movement, light, and playfulness. Hand perpetually tastes life for the first time. He breathes life into the world through color and his sense of humor is seen, for example, in the juxtaposition of flatness of form in deep space.

RAGDOLL-Ragdoll lives in darkness and noise. He is a sentient defense mechanism, reacting in adrenaline-fueled, snap movements. Ragdoll is chaos, he simply doesn’t know any better.

Sean Timothy Palmatier- BFA, Montserrat College of Art, Fine Arts concentration-- Artist statement: Passion is the driving force of all creative endeavors but the expression of passion alone has no context. Our ability to reason and reflect gives us the ability to define points of reference for our emotional experience. Color, in my work, is the direct expression of my emotional state at the time that a painting is created and although these works are not created from any direct visual references there are spatial and dimensional implications. This is the result of the initial drawing process which is a combination of gestural mark-making, imagination and an, admittedly, analytical nature. This gives the expression of my emotional state a psychological framework within which in can exist in context. The forms can appear to be organic or architectural, can jut out into space or fade into flatness but all is done with the intention of trying to articulate a state of being at a moment in time. -Sean T. Several local artists have expressed interest in solo and group shows at the ArtSpace, including book artists, a sculpture group and several painters and 2-d artists. Tick-Tock Art Exhibit at the Bentley Library
Northern Essex Community College

Haverhill, Eighteen artists responded to the open call for entries to exhibit work at the Bentley Library, 100 Elliot Street, at the Haverhill Campus, Northern Essex Community College. The show opens on June 2, 2008 and will run through June 30th. The show is open to the public for viewing during regular library hours which are Monday through Thursday 8 AM to 9 PM, Fridays 8 AM to 5PM and Saturdays 9AM to 1PM. This is a great opportunity to meet the artists and learn more about their work.
Each artist interpreted the theme, Tick-Tock, like a clock tick-tock, tick-tock. The show includes paintings, collage, pastel, digital imagery, photography and several mixed media pieces.
This is the first of several art shows planned for the Bentley library during the next year. Local artists Paulina Engel and Linda Germain have volunteered to coordinate shows for the library. It is a wonderful space and the hope is both the artists and the community will benefit from this endeavor.
